Mescan Lager reaches Blás na hÉireann finals

More good news for the brewery - Mescan Seven Virtues Lager has reached the final stages of the prestigious Blás na hÉireann awards. We’re in great company alongside eight other Mayo food and drink businesses.

We’re pretty chuffed about this as it’s the biggest competition for quality Irish produce on the island of Ireland with over 3,000 products taking part. The finals take place in Dingle next month so fingers and toes crossed that we end up on that podium.

For those who aren’t familiar with Mescan Lager, it is one of the small batch Seven Virtues series which proved so popular it’s become one of our core brews. We first released it in January 2019. Seven Virtues Lager is widely available in bottles and also on tap in 13 fine establishments in the west. It pops up as a tapped guest too, so keep your eyes peeled.

Crisp and slightly dry hopped, it’s a nod in the direction of both tradition and innovation. It makes a good aperitif and is also excellent along with a meal. Try it with steak or mussels and chips for an authentic Belgian experience. It’s also good with smoked cheese.

As with all our beers, the lager isn’t rushed to maturity. It sits "lagering" for more than 3 months at 1°C. During lagering the clean crisp flavours associated with lager beer develop and the beer clarifies naturally without filtration or the addition of chemicals. Our lager is dry hopped towards the end of the lagering period adding complexity and giving it a zing of fresh hop aroma.

Mescan Seven Virtues Lager is ideally served at a temperature of 2-4 °C and comes in at an alcohol level of 4.8% vol. If you haven’t tried it yet … we think you should!
